Scripture: The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Psalm 12:6
Thought: Many people are probably familiar with the childhood saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” As children we would chant this whenever someone teased or made fun of us. If you can remember an occasion as a child when you said this, you’ll probably remember that the words really did hurt. In fact, words can sometimes hurt more than sticks and stones because the wounds caused by words can have a life-long effect in one’s heart. Physical wounds will eventually heal.
Maybe you have been wounded by someone’s words against you. Maybe your heart has been hurt to the point where you have carelessly allowed bitterness, anger and sadness to creep in and take root. You may have even fallen prey to silently plan how best to counterattack. But today friend, know that you have control of what is allowed to enter into your heart. Instead of dwelling on those harsh words that were said to you, which by the way can make you physically ill, why not open the Bible and fill yourself with God’s Word instead. Fill yourself with His words which are pure and true.
God’s Word will give you the strength and ability to take the example of the Brahma bull. The Brahma bull has a unique hump on its back which contains a deposit of fat that acts as a survival mechanism. It is believed this hump developed after centuries of scarce food and water supplies. The hump also secretes an oily substance to help drive away flies. The interesting thing is that this secretion is also triggered when the bull feels threatened. If he is attacked by another animal, his skin will have been coated with this oily substance and the attacker’s impact will be a slippery and ineffective one. Well God’s Word does just that! It coats us with a special anointing so that when these kinds of attacks come, we will know how to let them slip away. God’s Word not only helps heal the wounds in your heart but will help increase your faith and trust in the Lord.
Trust that God has heard what was said to you; He is not deaf or blind. The Lord said in Psalm 12:5, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.” Leave the situation in God’s hands, and He will set things straight. Don’t allow bitterness to block your own words of prayer from reaching the throne of God and hinder your blessings. Instead, pray for those that have hurt you and allow forgiveness to restore your soul. And if you have been the one to deliver harsh words, repent before God and ask that person for forgiveness. Let your heart and words be pure like the heart and words of our Lord.
